I notice some girls say "he's cute" with a coy a smile on their face. Then I also hear them describe other guys as "he's hot.." with more of a ravaging look on their face.
But regardless maybe some of the females on this forum can help clarify what makes a guy cute vs hot.... and can a guy that is cute become hot and vice versa... or are you just 1 or the other?
FWIW, I asked a female friend of mine this and she circuitously said that guys who are hot are good to just hook up with but guys who are cute have more relationship potential

I think your friend pretty much hi it on the nose. I'd say a guy is hot if his looks grab you right away and you'd consider (even if only in your head) hooking up with him. I think cute is a bit more of a guy next door who could be relationship material if he has a good personality. Every girl has different taste though, so I can't say exactly what you need to be hot.
Personally, I think an air of cockiness (without being a dick) is hot. Anyone watch Smallville? Oliver Queen is HOT! Also, Colin Farrell - HOT Chris Evans - HOT
Cute would be James Franco, Justin Timberlake, the boys on Gossip Girl, and Bradley Cooper (Phil from the Hangover) just to show there really is no rhyme or reason to it.
Oh, the Twilight boys DON'T do it for me.

Could Justin Timberlake be considered a cross over example? I'm not gay or anything but his appearance from being in nsync to his solo career in videos like sexy back seem like a completely different persona. If you still classify him as cute then i think the op has one of his answers

Any of them could be cross over examples. That's just the way I would categorize the dudes. I don't find him Justin hot, but he seems like a cool dude that could win me over with personality.

I think that personality definitely plays a part in this though... I mean if Colin played the shy boy next door he'd probably be labeled as cute as opposed to his notorious cop bad boy roles....

I have always interpreted the cute vs. hot categorization to be reflective of the interpretation here by Jill. Generally speaking, I don't think whether a girl calls a guy "cute" or "hot" is any indication of whether she will ultimately sleep with him or even how fast it will happen.

No Maam fortunately for me I've been called both so I can somewhat attest that what you are saying is true.
However I think in regards to a One Night Stand or Same Night Hook Up - A guy who is cute may have to whip out his game more than a guy that a woman finds as hot.
